August 3, 2017 | First day with the kids

Today was our first day with the children at AFE, a holistic urban mission that Lisa is partnered with here in Honduras. We will be facilitating a camping ministry with these same kids over the next few days, but today we took the opportunity to visit the kids where they go to school. The AFE ministry was founded to help break generational cycles of poverty with families who work at the Tegucigalpa garbage dump. We met the leaders of AFE and toured the school, medical clinic, and urban farming facilities. We played outside with the kids for a while, which was probably the most fun part of the day for all of us. Then, after lunch we visited the garbage dump to hand out food and water to the families who were working there. That was definitely an intense experience, so our team spent an hour or so reflecting with we got back to AFE. We spent the rest of the afternoon on several work projects at AFE, including painting a room of one of the buildings, planting trees and plants throughout different parts of the grounds, and training the medical team at AFE on how to do vision screening and distribute glasses to families in the community. Tonight we are all with our host families once again. We have all been sharing with each other what a blessing it has been to stay with local people who have been showing us so much love and hospitality. We’re thankful for God’s goodness and provision through the local residents of Tegucigalpa. Please pray for a full night’s sleep for us tonight so that we can be rested up for the camping experience to begin tomorrow.
