Laura Hagy

{section}Laura’s Story{/section} Laura lives in the city of Gonaïves, Haiti, and works in a ghetto named Jubilee. Jubilee is the southern most part of Gonaïves, and is an area of intense generational poverty. Laura moved to Gonaïves in August of 2015, and has spent two years teaching 2nd and 3rd grade classes at Academie la Saline(Jubilee School). After two years of teaching, Laura is now moving next door to Klinik Jubilee -- an American run medical clinic located next to the city’s trash dump, which aims to provide top of the line medical treatment to those living in Jubilee, and meet their healthcare needs with excellence.  Laura will be working alongside the Clinic Director and Haitian staff to create and oversee the area’s first Social Work Program.  As a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Social Work, and a practiced child caseworker, Laura is excited to step into this role with her social work skillset, and fulfill the vision God has given her.

About Haiti

Despite being the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, Haiti is beautiful in its resiliency. Haiti (a name that means “mountainous country”) is one of the most populous countries in the Caribbean and is located on the island of Hispaniola with the Dominican Republic to its east. The official language is Haitian Creole (Kreyol) but the country’s business language is French. Political, geographic, and social difficulties have led to the problem of chronic poverty in Haiti.   {aside}{/aside} {aside}Ways to Pray 1. Bill & Susie Antolec

{section}Bill and Susie’s Story{/section} Bill and Susie live in a small village north of Chiang Rai, Thailand, near an area known as the Golden Triangle where Thailand, Myanmar, and Laos meet. They are leaders of a foundation called Shoulder-to-Shoulder (S2S), whose primary task is to help very poor Thai students to continue their education beyond the 9th grade. S2S also comes alongside poor families struggling with HIV. Its vision is to bring people to a knowledge and understanding of God through long term relationships and teaching the Bible. S2S supports students with educational donations and scholarships, and by providing a place to live. The students come from nearby mountain villages, with a focus first on orphans, second on single-parent families, and then families that are desperately poor. Bill and Susie believe that education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty. For HIV families, S2S provides supplemental food and encouragement. Because of better nutrition, HIV medication, and spiritual growth, people that were too sick to work are now able to be somewhat self-supporting.

About Thailand

Located in South East Asia, Thailand is home to majestic mountains, coastal landscapes, and complex river systems that provide irrigation and transporation throughout the country. Countless rice paddies have made Thailand the world’s largest exporter of this agricultural staple. Bustling cities like Bangkok have invited tourism, although Thailand has traditionally resisted Western influences. The people remain deeply rooted in Buddhism and Animism, uniting these religious elements with their cultural identity. {aside}{/aside} {aside}   Ways to Pray 1. Healing for HIV patients and hope for their families. 2. For the students of Shoulder-to-Shoulder, that they would grow as disciples of Christ. 3. Open doors for the Gospel to be shared in a culturally relevant way.{/aside} {aside}Thailand Facts Population: 68,272,872 Capital: Bangkok Primary Religion: Buddhism Language: Thai{/aside}
